Cancer has been described as a shape shifter, the grim reaper, hell, as well as a rollercoaster ride w/ many surprises--oddly enough, some are pleasant. Here is Zani's story.

  • Fox, Michael W., DVM. Eating with a Conscience. Perhaps the most compelling argument to eat organic. Fox is a veterinarian as well as a scientist. He examines all food-related issues from the raising of animals, to the feed lots, to the chemical baths for fish, to the lobbyists, to Bovine Growth Hormone, to Mad Cow's Disease, ... in sum, everything you may not want to know about flora, fauna, poultry and meat industry, government. If he had titled this book "The Poisons We Consume," or anything other than Eating w/ a Conscience, (since the average person does not), this would have been a best seller--a shame that it is not. This book may change your view on food for human consumption. As a result of having read this book, I converted to eating organic only, when possible, for my entire family.

  • Martin Goldstein, DVM Natural Healing of Animals

Basically the first "Bible" for beginners learning to navigate the world of canine/feline health; excellent resource section in back of book for other books, sources to buy homeopathic medicines, and an excellent list of holistic vets.

  • Martin, Ann N. Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Foods. OR: New Sage Press, 1997. A scathing attack on the unregulated pet food industry by the "Canadian Rachel Carson" who fought them after her own husky died partially due to ingredients in the pet food. Martin's expose is indeed shocking and a must read for all who care about their pets. Included are some great recipes as well as a resource section on which commercial foods are ok.

Everything you should know about cancer prevention and treatment for humans, applicable as well for animals but to be used with caution for animals as everything human is not good for animals. Different species, different requirements.

  • Philipson, Sandra. Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds Her Way. www.maxandannie.com Totally delightful and useful book to sensitize children to anyone with a physical disability. I read it to my twin girls (age 4 at the time) in preparation of possibly having to go that route w/ Zani. (for ages 4 and up)
  • TELEPATHING WITH ANIMALS

Books on Telecommunicating--while many doubt the veracity of whether animals understand us and whether there is telepathic understanding, I read all of these books w/ the idea that I could learn to 'speak' to Zani in pictures or speech so that I would have an equal partner in her treatment, diet, wellness. Although most of these books are anecdotal in nature, they are convincing. And I was/am able to 'sense' what an animal thinks or feels--not necessarily by following anyone's prescribed method but by being open to having those types of communications as possiblities.

  • Gurney, Carol. The Language of Animals: 7 Steps to Communicating with Animals. cgurney@earthlink.net www.animalcommunicator.net
I contacted Carol--she is pretty wonderful. She was having a workshop on Long Island which I very much wanted to attend but it was for 2 days in Nov when Zani was still very much with me, so I couldn't give up the time. She is located in CA but is willing to come and give a workshop anywhere if someone can host it by providing room and board for the duration of her 3 day stay.

Fitzpatrick, Sonya. What the Animals Tell Me.
Sonya Fitzpatrick, the Pet Psychic on the Animal Channel, says that people often think her ability to talk to animals is magic. She says that all humans have this ability, they just don't know it. Anyone can talk to animals, and the best pet owners already do. Here Sonya shares secrets to her successful communication with animals and offers some simple steps to making a psychic connection with your pet from her book. These are basically the same steps most animal telecommunicators use.

Seven Simple Steps to Communicating With Your Pet (from her website)
    1. Begin with a calm and tranquil mind, and seek out a calm and tranquil atmosphere for you and your animal.

    2. Say your animal's name telepathically to get his attention.

    3. Visualize your animal as you say his name.

    4. Send a picture of his physical body. Direct this to him, along with his name.

    5. Ask if there is anything your pet would like you to do for him. Imagine your animal is sending an answer back to you and accept whatever you receive in your imagination.

    6. Always acknowledge the answer, whatever you receive in your imagination.

    7. Continue to ask him other questions, and remember to trust your imagination for what you are receiving back from your animal.

  • Kincade, Amelia. Straight from the Horse's Mouth.

Ms Kincade has a very winning way of writing, having done comedy at one point in her life. While entertaining, and for that, worth reading, I found it difficult for beginners. Her suggestions for 'entering' into an animal's space requires much visualization and practice--good for those who are already practitioners of yoga and other types of meditation.

  • Mackay, Nicci. Spoken in Whispers: The Autobiography of a Horse Whisperer.

A bit difficult to get into because of the British English but Nicci is the female Monty Roberts and worth reading. A convincing horse whisperer, some of her stories are heartbreakers so have kleenex handy.

  • Meyers, Arthur. Communicating With Animals : The Spiritual Connection Between People and Animals. Meyers, an investigative reporter, doesn't provide steps on how to communicate w/ animals. (For that, see Amelia Kinkade's Straight from the Horse's Mouth, Penelope Smith's books, Carol Gurney, Nicci Mackay, and others on list.) His book is a report on who is out there and what they do. Especially useful is his list at the end of the book of all the best communicators (and healers) in the States and Canada as well as how to contact them.

  • Sheldrake, Rupert, PhD. Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home: And Other Unexplained Powers of Animals www.sheldrake.org
No one else has tackled the unknown as has this scientist. The premise of this researcher's book is an experiment in which dogs are tracked via video to determine whether there is some basis for thinking that dogs have abilities beyond human's normal understanding. Sheldrake goes much further by explaining electromagnetic fields and how communication on other fronts is achieved (geese during migration, schools of fish, et al). Much of the book is very scientific but explained in accessible terms for the layman. Besides being a fascinating read, he gives very valid explanations of many of the unknowns.

  • Smith, Penelope. Animal Talk. Point Reyes, CA: Pegasus Publications, '89. Animals...Our Return to Wholeness. '93.
Penelope Smith is probably one of the first animal communicators to publish. Carol Gurney owes much to her, as does Amelia Kincaid and many other

  • Tellington-Jones, Linda. The Tellington TTouch. NY: Viking, '92. Linda Tellington-Jones has cornered the market on telecommunicating via massage. I wasn't successful myself telecommunicating this way but Zani certainly appreciated the massages and laying on of hands. Others I know have been more successful.

  • Stein, Diane. All Women Are Psychics. Freedom, CA: The Crossing Press, 1998. A tough read but Ms. Stein covers all bases from astral projection to easy meditation.
